FAQ

  1. What conditions can speech, voice, and swallowing therapy help with?

Speech, voice, and swallowing therapy can help with communication issues caused by stroke, brain injury, neurological conditions (e.g., Parkinson’s, ALS), vocal cord damage, and age-related swallowing difficulties (dysphagia).

  2. How many sessions are needed per week?

Ideally, 2 sessions per week are recommended at the start of therapy, with some clients starting with 3. As progress is made, the frequency can decrease. If you can only do 1 session per week, that’s fine, but regular home practice is essential, as progress may take a bit longer.

  3. How long does each session last?

A typical session lasts around 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the individual's needs and the type of therapy being provided.

  4. How long will therapy take to show results?

The duration of therapy varies by individual. Some clients see improvements within a few weeks, while others may require longer-term therapy. The progress depends on the condition being treated and the individual’s commitment to therapy exercises.

  5. Are the sessions covered by insurance?

Many insurance plans cover speech, voice, and swallowing therapy, especially with a doctor’s referral. However, coverage can vary depending on your country and insurance provider. It’s important to check with your provider to understand what is included in your plan, as some policies may not cover therapy sessions.

  6. What should I expect in my first session?

The first session involves an in-depth evaluation of your condition. This may include a review of your medical history, a physical examination, and various assessments to determine the best course of therapy.

  7. Do I need a referral from a doctor to start therapy?

Ideally, a doctor’s referral is recommended, and many insurance companies require it to cover therapy sessions. However, in many cases, patients contact us directly without a referral, and we can still begin therapy based on their needs.

  8. Is online therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

Absolutely! Online therapy offers the same level of personalized, evidence-based care as in-person sessions. Many clients appreciate the flexibility and convenience of virtual sessions, especially when commuting or scheduling is a challenge. With the right guidance and practice, online therapy can be just as successful in helping you achieve your therapy goals from the comfort of your home.

  9. What can I do at home to support my therapy?

Your therapist will likely give you exercises and strategies to practice at home. Consistency is key, and regularly practicing at home can accelerate your progress between sessions.

  10. Will therapy help improve my quality of life?

Absolutely. Effective speech, voice, and swallowing therapy can enhance communication, make eating safer and more enjoyable, and improve overall confidence and independence in daily activities.

  11. Will I receive any materials to use outside of our sessions?

Yes, I provide handouts that summarize key points from our sessions and documents that include important exercises to review. Additionally, I encourage open communication and am available for any questions you may have outside of our scheduled appointments.
